According to the Department of Health, the health minister Ann Keen announced that new NHS training places will be made available in areas of highest patient need.

The extra new places for 2009 will be located in Yorkshire, the North West, the South West and the South Central area.

Also all dentists that graduate every year from 2010 will be allocated places in areas where dental demand is greatest.

There is also consideration whether to extend the NHS vocational training scheme to two years to broaden the base of experience. This will help to address poor access to dentists.

The government is providing £32 million to meet the cost of vocational training of dental graduates over the three year period extending from 2009. This is in addition to the yearly £30 million that the government is already investing in dental schools for the increasing number of students.

Ann Keen also announced that the money being invested in NHS dentistry will continue until 2011; two years more than it was expected.
